ISABEL OLI: More than just a pretty face

ONE of the most beautiful faces on television today, Isabel Oli conquered the hearts of audiences when she appeared in TV commercials that led her to a role in Sugo on GMA-7. Now, she plays one of the long-lost princesses in the fictional undersea kingdom Atlantika. As Alona, she possesses the mysterious power of the moon but has lost her memory when she was taken away from the magical world of Atlantika.
Isabel’s big break was her Max’s Fried Chicken commercial where she played “Isabel,” the childhood sweetheart of the lead character played by Piolo Pascual. Isabel easily became a household name, and not a few advertising executives noticed the girl they thought embodied the term “ ingénue.”
No, she isn’t. Isabel has been modeling since she was 15 in her native Cebu, and like most models, the teenaged runway mannequin wanted to be big, so she moved, packed her bags and flew to Manila where she believed her dream would one day be a reality.
Isabel joined the MTV Fashionista modeling contest in 2003 where she bagged three special awards from Canon, Jag Jeans, and Nivea. From then on, she graced magazine covers, billboards, and print ads.

Born on Oct. 20, 1981 in the Queen City of the South, she is the youngest of the seven children of an interracial marriage — her father is a Filipino of Chinese ancestry, and her mother is of Filipino and Spanish blood mix. Maria Olivia Daytia, her real name, graduated from the University of San Jose- Recoletos where she majored in Information Technology. She would have been working as an IT specialist if she didn’t fall into the pits of show business.
Not a few knows that she used to be a Kapamilya, debuting on TV in ABS-CBN’s primetime drama It Might Be You, in which she co-starred with John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo. However, it seems like fate so desired her to somewhere else. And that is to be a Kapuso.

Her star shone brighter when she bagged the lead role opposite Richard Gutierrez in Sugo. After which she made an appearance playing a major supporting role in the Marvin Agustin-Jolina Magdangal TV reunion of a drama titled I Luv NY. She was also featured twice in the TV series Love to Love Seasons 9 and 11 where she was paired up with Paolo Contis, who is rumored to be her real-life boyfriend.
No monthly celebration for her and Paolo, since they don’t have any. She said that having official dates would only cause misunderstandings, especially when one of them forgets the occasion. Actually, Isabel is not sure of the date when they became officially “on.” They just remember the day when they first met.
She is very much in love with Paolo whom she describes as kind, loyal, responsible, and thoughtful. Paolo, she admits, loves to surprise her. “Corny going strong,” she says when asked how their relationship is going on.
Isabel Oli’s biggest dream now is to prove to all and sundry that she isn’t just another pretty face in show business.

SEXY mode ang karamihan ng young Kapuso stars sa 2007 planner na regalo ng GMA Artist Center.

Our friend from the start of the said department sa GMA-7 Jenny Donato handed us its department’s Christmas gift, a 2007 planner nga with one to five stars per month featured.

Una siyempre si Angel Locsin na co-managed na pala ng Artist Center with Becky Aguila in a runner’s pose complete with cleavage for January. Sexy lingerie naman si Katrina Halili for February, just in firemen’s suit sina Nadine Samonte and Cristine Reyes with that StarStruck male avenger for March.

Halos hindi namin nakilala si Jennylyn Mercado of April in her jungle girl look or even si Jackie Rice together with Iwa Moto, Marky Cielo and Gian Carlos for May.

Sleeping mode naman sina Isabel Oli and the topless Brad Turvey for June. Student looks sina Mike Tan, Ryza Cenon, CJ Muere and LJ Reyes for July, boxer si Iza Calzado for August at cleavage kung cleavage din, diyosa si Rhian Ramos with Dominic and Felix Roco for September. Magician si Mark Herras for October, at twenties look sina Yasmien Kurdi and Rainier Castillo for November.

Pinoy Pop Superstars Gerard, Aicelle, Bre-nan and Jonalyn with Ar-yana ang last entry for December.

Sa Pebrero, isang taon na rin ang relasyon nina Paolo Contis at Isabel Oli na nagsimula lamang nang magkasama sila sa seryeng Sugo at nagtuluy-tuloy na sa Love To Love. At swerte naman na sa loob ng isang taon ay wala silang naging grabeng away.

"Minsan lang sa sobrang pagbiro niya ay gusto ko na siyang i-give up," sabi ni Isabel sabay bawi at sinabing nagbibiro lang siya.

"Hindi ko magawang magalit sa kanya dahil sobrang sweet niya. At honest siya, lahat ng nangyari sa buhay niya nung hindi pa kami ay ikinuwento niyang lahat sa akin," pagmamalaki ni Isabel na ang buong pamilya ay umuwi galing abroad at dito nag-celebrate ng Christmas.

"Sa bahay lang kami, hindi kami lumabas. Paolo proved to be a very good host. Love nila siya," dagdag pa ng magandang aktres na umaming nahirapan siya nung una sa mga underwater scenes niya sa Atlantika.

"Umiyak ako sa takot nang pumunta kami ng mga 20 feet underwater and I saw a baby octopus.

"Akala nila kasi okay na ako dahil nasanay ako sa pool. Iba pala kapag nasa dagat na, madilim. Naintindihan naman ako ng production, hindi na nila itinuloy ang eksena ko, dinaya na lamang," kwento pa ni Isabel na nakakaramdam na ng lungkot dahil malapit nang magtapos ang Atlantika. Nasa huling yugto na sila ng kanilang taping pero hanggang ngayon, di pa nila alam na lahat kung paano magwawakas ang serye.

Isabel on Paolo: Minsan, nakakainis ang sense of humor niya

PAOLO Contis and Isabel Oli will celebrate their first anniversary in February.

They met on the set of “Sugo” and before the series ended, they were also paired in “Love to Love” and love bloomed. Last Christmas, Isabel’s entire family came to Manila from Singapore and Cebu and Paolo was with them most of the time. “They left exactly noong New Year, January 1,” says Isabel. “By that time, close na si Paolo to them. They all like him dahil masaya raw kasama, laging nagpapatawa. He was a very good host to them.”

They haven’t had any big conflict so far. “Minsan lang, sobra siyang magbiro and if you’re not used to his sense of humor, maiinis ka. But he’s really sweet. Lahat ng nangyari sa buhay niya before we became on, ikinuwento niya lahat sa ‘kin.”

It’s while they’re doing “Atlantika” that they became even closer. “He’s very caring. Tinuruan niya ko ng diving for the underwater scenes. At first, umiiyak ako sa takot when we went 20 feet underwater at nakakita ako ng octopus. Pero hindi niya ko talaga pinabayaan. Now that ‘Atlantika’ is ending, somehow, nakakalungkot kasi na-ging maganda rin ang bonding ko with Iza Calzado and Katrina Halili.”
